Replacing Appliances is Necessary

When items in your home aren’t doing what they’re meant to, it can be frustrating. Our stove, dishwasher, washing machines, and refrigerators are gadgets we rely on for daily chores and activities.

However, there does come a time in every appliance’s life when things begin to fall into disrepair. The dishes aren’t coming out of the dishwasher as clean anymore, and the refrigerator is making an odd sound. Soon enough, your appliances will do more harm than good.

If you’re not sure when to make the call and start shopping for a replacement appliance, the Atlas Plumbing team is here to help! Read on to discover the signs of an outdated appliance and get some tips on what to look for in new purchases.

Washer & Dryer

Laundry day can be overwhelming when your schedule is busier than ever. You don’t have time to worry about whether or not the kids’ jerseys will be dry enough for the game tonight! Your washer and dryer should last around 10 years if properly cared for. You should consider replacement if your units are reaching that age and beginning to exhibit the following issues:

  • Unusually loud noises
  • Higher water bills
  • Visible leaks
  • Not fully drying clothes
  • Burning smells
  • Violent shaking during cycles.

Some of these issues can easily be repaired, and if your units aren’t that old, you should consider this route. However, when the repairs become more and more frequent, a replacement is typically the smarter, and cheaper option.

Refrigerator

It’s no secret that refrigerators are an essential household appliance that we rely on heavily. These appliances will usually last between 10-12 years and when there is an issue, they will make it known. Some common signs that you need a replacement fridge include:

  • Excess condensation
  • Mildew around the sealing
  • The back feeling warm to the touch
  • Easily spoiled food
  • Higher than usual energy bills

If your fridge is over 10 years old, it’s time to keep an eye out for these issues and start shopping for a new one soon!

When looking for a replacement, look for a refrigerator that will fit your family’s needs. Consider how much storage you need, what type of icemaker you’d prefer, and the type of freezer!

Dishwasher

The convenience of a dishwasher is one thing, but did you know that a properly working dishwasher uses way less water than washing dishes by hand? If your dishwasher is over 10 years old and begins using more and more water, resulting in higher water bills, then it may be time to replace. Additionally, a 10+ year old dishwasher is ready for retirement if it is no longer cleaning or drying your dishes properly.

Water Heater

Your water heater is the appliance that will likely require the most regular maintenance in order to live a long life. So, remember to schedule your preventative maintenance appointments! However, if a water heater is more than 12 years old, maintenance and repairs may be costing you more money than a replacement would.

We strongly recommend replacement if you have an old water heater showing these signs of disrepair:

  • Water will not heat to the correct temperature
  • Strange noises come from the heater
  • Leaks
  • Changes in pressure

When it comes time to replace, consider upgrading to a more efficient model or a tankless water heater. These may be a great option for your family and lifestyle.

Choosing New Appliances

When it comes time to shop, take into consideration that these appliances will be with you for at least the next 10 years. Think about size, color, and finish and make sure it’s something you love and are excited about.

Efficiency is an important thing to look for in appliances. Look for the Energy Star label granted by the U.S. Department of Energy and look for the Energy Guide label to be sure your dishwasher runs efficiently.
